Intrigued by human bodily interventions, visual artist Leeroy New is interested in exposing the arbitrary nature of the mainstream presentation of the human anatomy. By applying raw latex on the bodies of the performers to dry moments before the performance. New will reconfigure the performers’ anatomy by exploiting the elastic properties of the latex material through a series of stretching and tying actions done in front of the audience.
From a malleable superficial peeling of the skin, the second half of the performance will transition into the usage of cardboard and duct tape; bodies clad in a carapace-like armor. Sharp geometric protrusions fashioned in almost haphazard or crude manner give the bodies an almost alien silhouette. New will interlink the bodies with duct tape, challenging their physical limitations.
About the Artists:
Leeroy New is an artist designer whose practice overlaps and intersects with film, theatre, product design and fashion. Originally trained as a sculpture, he tried everything from production design for film, to working with fashion designer, to creating 3D mock-ups for commercial purposes. He was able to integrate this inclination to move from one mode of creative production to another as the spine of his creative practice. http://leeroynew.com/
Chloe Calderon Chotrani is a movement artist with a repertoire of training ranging from street dance, black dance forms and contemporary having traveled and studied in the Philippines, West Africa and New York. Chloe is interested in going beyond national hierarchy by creating space for connectivity that exceed boundaries by immersing in cross-cultural experiences through her work. http://chloechotrani.com/
Yasuno Miyauchi is a Japanese composer. In 2005 she graduated from Tokyo Gakugei University, where she studied classical & modern music composition. From 2005-07 she was a graduate student at IAMAS (Institute of Advanced Media Arts and Sciences), where she studied media art, computer music, & algorithmic composition under Prof. Masahiro Miwa. During her research she developed a musical expression using the human body, creating the choir piece “breath strati”, focusing especially on the voice and overtones, which received the “Honorary Mention” at “Prix Ars Electronica 2008”. She is interested in music performances where many people form a group to create sound, paying special attention to the voice and the body. Thus she launched the music performance group TSUMUGINE in 2008, now performing actively. Recently, she has challenged composing for Japanese traditional music, and has released a new piece for Japanese ancient instruments and for Shomyo (Japanese buddhist chant). She has been working on this simple musical method called “TSUMUGINE Method”, to organize various workshops and outreach programs at schools and NPOs for people of all ages with different background, trying to apply the method not only in artistic approaches but also in other social issues such as education and welfare. http://yasunomiyauchi.com/
