We’re entering into uncertain times. Todd Bradford Richmond explores the experience of the unknown in his solo exhibition Dark Forest — a new series of large-scale oil paintings and immersive installation.

Richmond’s new works investigate the inner voice of the unknown and uncertain, placing the viewer as if standing within a dark forest where enigmatic light illuminates silhouetted trees. Lit with blue lasers and LED lights, Laser Forest uses light as a medium. The blue lasers create an experiential forest of light that can be interacted with and wandered through while simultaneously illuminating the large works: Dark Forest (100″ x 160″, oil on canvas, 2016), Painted Forest (100″ x 160″, oil on canvas, 2016), each created on 40 – 20″x 20″ panels, and Negative Forest (100″ x 160″, vinyl, 2016). Richmond has selected several sections of the large scale paintings to duplicate as “details”—scaled to double their original size existing as individual “solos”. The solos zoom into a section of the painting, forming their own compositions. One can also zoom out from a painted detail and explore how a solo painting or detail fits into a broader composition.

Richmond makes paintings, installations, films and music compositions, encompassing an ongoing conversation across mediums and employs diverse materials and modes, exchanging language and concepts between genres. His practice draws upon nature, form, composition and the kinetic that is informed by his lifelong interests in painting, music, dance, film, architecture, agriculture and the environment.
