TOPAZ ARTS Visual Arts Program is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new work by artist Jason A. Cina.  This new work is a result of a two-year series consisting of eight large-scale carved and painted wood panels of equal dimension (43.5″ x 56″ x 3″). Blending urban and rural influences, Cina’s process starts with found and donated wood in less than pristine condition which define parameters for the work. Natural materials worn and decayed are outlined and layered with new vibrancy and luminosity.

In a process and rigor reminiscent of lacquer paintings, Cina creates a contemporary technique of layering and burnishing of panels to reveal a desired image. Construction begins by creating lines of varying width, gouging out vein-like forms into the plywood. The hallowed space is then refilled with hardened material, which are later carved and painted upon. Next, on the remaining flat surface, shapes are painted, masked in similar form and painted again several times. In the process, Cina uses spray paint and latex paint on the carved wood, layering with joint compound, plaster, shredded paper, sawdust, paint, and shellac. Creating depth and dimension, the surfaces ultimately reveal nuanced layers of color and vibrant fields. Color dots populate the panels – evocative of the infamous field of dots by Damien Hirst or the prolific polka-dots of Yayoi Kusama – here, the color dots by Jason Cina are integrated within his method, revealing layers of color and material used in the process.
