We are pleased to support Julian Barnett this Fall with residency space at TOPAZ ARTS to develop his new work BLUEMARBLE, scheduled to premiere in the U.S. on Oct 23-25, 2014 at the Danspace Project. About the Artist:
Julian Barnett is an artist creating performance-based works, which utilize language, movement, visual art and musicology, to explore socio-political possibilities for transformation and empathy. Since 2009, Julian has been invited throughout New York, North America, Europe, China and Japan. His first work FLOAT, premiered at La Mama Theater in New York and was later acquired by Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. Since FLOAT, Julian has focused on longer, more experimental works, creating ECHOLOGUE (Tangente, CA/Joyce Theater, NY), BLUEMARBLE (Kampnagel, DE/La Briqueterie, FR), BRIDGE (AUNTS/American Realness Festival, NY), SOUND MEMORY (Danspace Project, NY), which was selected as “Best of 2009” for Dance by TimeOut New York, and others. Born in Tokyo, Japan and raised in Northern California, Julian studied dance, music and film at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. In 2012, he completed the ArtEZ master of choreography program in the Netherlands and was a danceWEB scholar at the Impulstanz Festival in Vienna, Austria. As a dancer, Julian performed in the duet SHIFT, by Johannes Wieland, which won the Kurt Jooss Award and performed alongside Pina Bausch’s Tanztheater. He was a founding member of Larry Keigwin’s company in New York, and also performed in the companies of Lar Lubovitch, Doug Elkins, Shapiro and Smith, Kevin Wynn, Christopher Williams and the Metropolitan Opera with Doug Varone. More recently, Julian has primarily been involved in the works of Wally Cardona, Jeanine Durning and Steve Paxton. julianbarnett.com

About the Project:
Bluemarble
When astronauts travel into space and see firsthand the reality of the whole Earth from afar, they frequently experience a type of phenomena described as the ‘overview effect’. This perspective of our tiny ‘blue marble’ fragilely hanging in the void becomes a launching point for a performance that reflects on our world from a long distance viewpoint. Part science-fiction part archetype, BLUEMARBLE paints a voyage where two people tap into a field of persistence that relentlessly circulates physical and vocal information. Using this as both feedback and fuel, elevated glimpses are created that challenge how we perceive community and autonomy in both intimate and global ways.
