Avy Claire:
For The Trees
March 14 to April 11, 2009
Opening Reception: Sat, Mar 14, 3-6pm
TOPAZ ARTS is pleased to present
an installation by visual artist Avy Claire whose works explore nature and the human interaction within nature. For this installation, large-scale drawings on translucent sheets measuring over eight feet high are suspended throughout the space. Using the physicality of the written word, she transcribes the relentless language of daily news and transforms them into creative energy. Words take form to create a forest environment. In a sense Avy Claire's work demonstrates human attempts at making a mark on nature -- For the Trees illustrates how nature can mend.
"I often listen to news on the radio when working
in my studio. A few years ago, I found myself making patterns of
marks; something I could do while in the studio listening to what
is going on in the world around me. It was a way of passing time;
it was a way to cope. The work, mostly on translucent mylar would
come in the form of pages and scrolls; objects that record and
layer moments, and refer to the passage of time. I was waiting.
It occurred to me recently that I should start writing the words
I was hearing. I needed to have them pass through me.
Trees have been an important element in my life.
I experience trees as guardians and find great solace in the woods.
For this installation, I decided to create a forest environment.
It seemed that I could give these words to their image as a way
to call on them; that they would know what to do, that they could
somehow help."
Avy Claire is an artist and landscape
