THREADS is a cultural exchange project that encourages visual artists to enter into a dialogue with poetry. A core group of artists from around the globe – Russia, Ukraine, Philippines, Colombia, and America – choose poems from a curated selection of contemporary world poetry, creating new visual works inspired by the selected poems. By using varied textile techniques that intertwine, they create connections between the words and the images, binding themselves to the poets through time and space. The resulting art will be presented in a series of exhibitions together with the poetry that inspired it.
Curated by Alejandra Fonseca, artists include Juliana Canal, Angelica Chavarro, Sandro Londoño, Ged Merino, Aze Ong, Carolina Pérez, with poetry curated by Olena Jennings. The exhibitions were initiated in Bogota, Colombia at The Maleza Proyectos, traveling to New York in multi-venues at Flux Factory, Bliss on Bliss Art Projects and TOPAZ ARTS, the series will continue at The Drawing Room Contemporary Art in Manila, Philippines, with the exhibition finally returning to the U.S. and Bogota.
The Garage Door Projects is sponsored by TOPAZ ARTS, Inc. and is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
