PARA / [for]
para kanino? para sa iyo? at para sa akin? para sa ating lahat.
[for who? for you? and for me? for us all.]

Many exchanges occur in the invisible strings that connect our hands, our work, our love, our healing, and our hearts. Outside the home and inside the home – in relation to and out of relation from – I find myself over and over again entangled and unraveled within the strings of my self, my lover, my family, my circle, my work, my culture, traditions, systems, and environments. PARA attempts to make sense of the (dis)connect I experience from my self and my family lineage, and also my lineage’s inherent presence and patterning within me. My most recent ancestor – my late-Lola Caring who passed away in 2018 – inspired the heart of this piece. PARA is “for” her, maybe even “of” her, and it’s also “for” us (“of” us) who still exist on this earth, carrying on the strings she passed down. — Marie Lloyd Paspe

This piece is made possible by Queens Council of the Arts New Works Grant and TOPAZ ARTS Dance Residencies with funding from NYS DanceForce.
